The world of Classic Rock is full of wild stories of excess, debauchery, and just plain fun. However some moments from this golden era of rock have slipped under the radar.

Jim Morrison – Starving and Homeless Artist

The Door’s have gone on to become on of the most notable and influential band’s of their era. The group’s willingness to experiment with different musical and lyrical styles has cemented their legacy in rock fame. However, the band’s front man Jim Morrison had his fair share of struggles to reach his “rock god” status.

A then college aged Morrison had no place to call home, living on a rooftop of a Venice Beach apartment in 1965. This rooftop may have been fate however as later, UCLA classmate Ray Manzarek and Morisson decided to form the band in that very spot after a long day on the beach. Sometimes, life really is a sliding doors scenario.

Elvis Presley and Alice Cooper – Defense Training

While Elvis Presely and Alice Cooper may seem far off on paper; the artists share a lot in common. Both were extremely popular in each of their genres’ and each used “shock” in different ways to attract a wider audience. However when the two met in Las Vegas in the early 70’s, noone could have predicted the story to follow.

As the story goes, Cooper and some of this associates had been invited to Elvis’s Hotel Suite for an evening meeting. After being checked by Elvis security detail, “The King of Rock n Rock” himself pulled out a loaded .38 revolver. After the initial shock of seeing the gun, Elvis explained to the group that he wanted to show them how to disarm someone, a piece of martial arts training he had recently learned. Moments later Alice Cooper took hold of the gun, pointed it at Elvis, and was immediately brought the ground by a sweeping kick. A good story, and a good lesson in self defense.

Bob Dylan – The Gardner

In the early 1980’s Elton John was enjoying this sucess to the fullest; hosting lavish days long parties, that even he admits to often times having a fuzzy memory of. During once of these extravagant parties, John became very agitated when he noticed his in-house gardener, one of his staff, indulging in the festivities. When John confronted the scruffy looking “gardener” it turned out to be none other than Folk legend, Bob Dylan.

Dylan has always been known for his “rough around the edges” appearance, often wearing plain and tattered clothing. As a contrast John, know for his flamboyant and extravagant costumes and wardrobe, did apologize to Dylan for the mix-up, but also offered to get him some new and better fitting pieces of clothing. An offer that Dylan went on to politely decline.

Queen vs The Sex Pistols

Even though Queen and the Sex Pistols shared fame and success, doesn’t mean they need to get along. Queen, a more operatic and earnest group, didn’t have the same biting nature as the Sex Pistols, one of punk genre’s greatest stalwarts.

When both groups happened to be recording at a London based studio in 1977, Sex Pistols frontman Sid Vicious decided to let his punk attitude get the best of him. After entering into Queen’s session, Vicious left with a distasteful comment to the band; “Have you brought ballet to the masses?”

For this disrespectful remark, the tall and imposing Freddie Mercury, picked up Vicious and physically removed him from the studio space. Sometimes a punk attitude can only get you so far.
