The late 70’s was an interesting time for music. The pessimism of the late 60’s and early 70’s was starting to wain as American culture moved into a new and more optimistic direction. And what is more optimistic than the most joyous feeling of them all; love. With this shift in the national identity and a rise in the popularity of Disco and Dance music, 1977 really was one of the best years of all time for love songs. Below are some of the most enduring love songs of that year.

The Emotions – “Best of My Love“

People may not know it but another infamous wedding song (Earth Wind & Fire’s “September”) and this track share DNA. Co-produced by Maurice White, one of EWF’s key musicians, “Best of My Love” is an absolute classic. Up-beat in a way that few modern songs are, the gospel-inspired vocals and energetic arrangements would make even the most jaded among us tap their toes. “Best of My Love” won a Grammy that year for “Best R&B Performance” and it’s no suprise. A song this catchy has gone on to be a classic, and has been featured in several TV series and movies, notably 20 years later in 1997’s Boogie Nights.

Billy Joel – “Just The Way You Are“

A deeply romantic but relatable track, “Just the Way You Are”, was written for Billy Joel’s first wife, apparently while he was dreaming. The song was Joel’s first ever Top 10 hit in the US, and features a beautfiul saxophone section by long-time Joel collaborator, Phil Woods. Younger listeners are more likely to come across Bruno Mars’ song of the same title, but what sets this ’77 hit apart is it’s vulnerability and earnestness.

Fleetwood Mac – “You Make Loving Fun”

A single from Rumors (one of Fleetwood Mac’s most endearing album’s) “You Make Loving Fun” found the band playing with the Disco sound of the late 70’s. Written by Christine McVie about a trist that she had with the band’s then Lighting Director, McVie would often cite that song was inspired by her dog. The track is often citied to be among one Fleetwood Mac’s underrated gems.

Paul McCartney and Wings – “Maybe I’m Amazed”

Although the song was originally recorded in 1970, the best known version was a 1977 live recording with McCartney’s band Wings. Penned by McCartney right before the Beatle’s breakup in 1969, the song also finds him playing all the instruments. As a testament to the songs strength, McCartney has citied this track as one he’d like to be remembered for, even among all of his incredible work with the Beatles.

Carly Simon – “Nobody Does It Better”

One of the few Carly Simon hits not penned by herself, “Nobody Does It Better” was helmed by Composer Marvin Hamlisch, the track was written for the 1977 James Bond Film, The Spy Who Loved Me. The bombastic approach of the track is partially inspired to match the excitement and fast pace of a 007 film.
